The Journal of Caribbean Ornithology (JCO) is seeking a part-time Copy Editor to join our enthusiastic Editorial Team. For the past 32 years, the Journal of Caribbean Ornithology has been the leading ornithological journal in the Caribbean, providing free, peer-reviewed, ornithological literature to students, researchers, and conservationists across the globe. Job Description: The Copy Editor will work alongside our fantastic Editorial Team, specifically under the direction of the journal’s Lead Copy Editor, to move peer-reviewed manuscripts through the copy editing phase of production. This involves proof-reading and formatting manuscripts, cross-referencing literature, and editing for accuracy, among other responsibilities. The Copy Editor will be given a set of tasks to complete within a given period of time, but can fulfill those tasks at any time of day that is convenient to them. Applicants must be able to work independently while maintaining consistent and professional levels of communication with the JCO Editorial Board. This position can be worked remotely from anywhere with a solid internet connection.
Applicants must have:
Previous editing experience
Excellent English language skills and knowledge of grammar rules
Proficiency with Microsoft Word
Strong attention to detail
Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines
A reliable internet connection
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
Previous experience editing scientific literature (does not need to have been ornithological literature)
Second language skills with Spanish and/or French
The position is projected to entail anywhere from 3-5 hours of work per week at $15/hr. Depending on work ethic and JCO needs, the successful applicant may be offered additional opportunities for growth within JCO.
